White Opal

White Opal, which is also known as milky opals, are solid pieces of opal with a white to light grey background. The color generally comes from quartz, which is the same mineral as opal, and generally runs from opaque to translucent. As with any opal that is gem quality, white opals can display any color of the specrtum in their play of color.

White opals are more common, than other kinds of opal such as mexican opal, or black opal, and therefore less valuable due to the fact that they appear pale in comparason, and thus the play of color is less evident. However, good quality white opals can be incredibly beautiful and fetch prices of up to $400.00 per carat.
